How to Sponsor a Post on Instagram from Nigeria: The 2026 Guide

How to Sponsor a Post on Instagram from Nigeria: The 2026 Guide

An Instagram sponsored post is a post you pay Instagram to show to people who do not follow you yet. From Nigeria, you can sponsor a post in three ways: boost it in the Instagram app, build an ad in Meta Ads Manager, or pay a creator to post about you. Meta adds 7.5 percent VAT to ad spend for Nigerian advertisers, so a ₦100,000 budget costs ₦107,500 in total.

This guide shows you each method step by step. In addition, it explains what an Instagram sponsored post costs in naira, how to pay from Nigeria, how to choose your audience, and why ads get rejected. As a result, you can run your first campaign with confidence and avoid the mistakes that waste money.

In this guide:

  1. What an Instagram sponsored post is
  2. What you need before you start
  3. Three ways to sponsor a post
  4. What it costs in Nigeria and how to pay
  5. Targeting, content and approval
  6. How to measure results
  7. Mistakes, rules and common questions

What is an Instagram sponsored post?

An Instagram sponsored post is any post, Reel or Story that a business pays to show to more people. Instagram marks it with the word “Sponsored” under the account name. Because of that payment, your post can reach people outside your followers, such as women aged 25 to 40 in Lekki or small business owners in Abuja.

In practice, people use the term for three different things:

TypeWho posts itLabel people seeBest for
Boosted postYour own account, from the Instagram appSponsoredQuick reach for a post that already performs well
Ads Manager adYour own account, built in Meta Ads ManagerSponsoredSales, leads and detailed targeting
Paid partnershipA creator’s account, about your brandPaid partnershipBorrowing trust from someone your customers follow

So before you spend, decide which of the three fits your goal. For example, a boost suits a new Reel that already gets many comments. By contrast, a sale with a deadline usually works better as an Ads Manager ad, because you get more control over the audience and the result you pay for.

Instagram sponsored post or organic post: which should you use?

Paid and free posts work best together. Organic posts build trust with people who already follow you. Meanwhile, an Instagram sponsored post brings in new people who have never heard of you. So most growing brands post organic content several times a week and sponsor only the posts that perform best.

What you need before you sponsor a post on Instagram

Preparation saves money. Therefore, check these five things before you create your first Instagram sponsored post:

  • A professional account: only business and creator accounts can sponsor posts. To switch, open your profile, tap Edit profile, then choose “Switch to a professional account”. It is free.
  • A complete profile: add a clear photo, a short bio that says what you sell, your WhatsApp number or website link, and your location. People who tap the ad will judge you by this page.
  • A payment method: a naira debit card, a dollar card or another method Meta offers for your account. We explain the options later in this guide.
  • A post worth paying for: pick a post that already earns comments, shares or saves. Paid reach makes a good post better, but it rarely rescues a weak one.
  • ARCON approval where needed: in Nigeria, the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) must approve adverts before they go live, and that includes social media ads. We cover the rules near the end of this guide.

Also, connect your Instagram account to a Facebook Page through the Meta Accounts Centre. You can boost from the app without a Page. However, Meta Ads Manager and many business tools work best when you link the two.

Method 1: Boost a post from the Instagram app

Boosting is the fastest way to run an Instagram sponsored post. It takes about five minutes, and you can do it from your phone.

Step 1: Choose the post

Open your profile and pick a post or Reel that already performs well. Then tap the “Boost” button under the post. For a Story, the button sits at the bottom of the screen.

Step 2: Choose your goal

Next, Instagram asks what you want people to do. You can usually choose from three goals:

  • Profile visits: people tap through to your profile.
  • Website visits: people tap a button that opens your website or online store.
  • Messages: people send you a direct message, which suits most Nigerian businesses that close sales in chat.

In general, choose messages if you sell through chat, and website visits if you sell through an online store. The goal decides what your Instagram sponsored post asks people to do.

Step 3: Choose your audience

After that, pick who will see the post. The automatic option lets Instagram find people similar to your followers. Alternatively, create your own audience with locations, ages and interests, such as “Lagos and Abuja, 25 to 45, interested in fashion”.

Step 4: Set your budget and duration

Then set a daily budget and the number of days your Instagram sponsored post will run. Instagram shows an estimate of how many people the post may reach before you pay. According to a guide by Shopify, Meta advises a budget of at least $5 a day for six days, which gives the system enough time to learn who responds.

Step 5: Review and pay

Finally, check the preview, add your payment method and tap “Boost post”. Meta then reviews the post against its advertising rules, usually within 24 hours. Once approved, your Instagram sponsored post starts running.

A warning for iPhone users

Apple takes a 30 percent service fee when you boost a post inside the Instagram or Facebook app on an iPhone. Engadget reported that Meta passes this fee to advertisers. To avoid it, add funds to your Meta account on a computer or a mobile web browser first. Then use those funds to boost from any device without the fee.

Method 2: Create an Instagram sponsored post in Meta Ads Manager

Meta Ads Manager gives you far more control over an Instagram sponsored post than the Boost button. For that reason, most agencies and serious advertisers use it. It also lets you run one ad on Instagram and Facebook together, or on Instagram alone.

Follow these steps on a computer:

  1. Open Ads Manager: go to adsmanager.facebook.com and sign in with the Facebook profile linked to your business.
  2. Create a campaign: click Create, then choose an objective such as Awareness, Traffic, Engagement, Leads or Sales. The objective tells Meta which result to look for.
  3. Set the budget: choose a daily or lifetime budget, plus start and end dates.
  4. Build the audience: add locations, ages, genders and interests. For local businesses, target a city or a radius around your shop.
  5. Choose placements: select manual placements and tick only Instagram feed, Stories, Reels and Explore if you want an Instagram sponsored post alone.
  6. Add the creative: upload new images or videos, or select “Use existing post” to sponsor a post you already published.
  7. Write the text and button: add a short caption, a headline and a call to action such as Send message, Shop now or Learn more.
  8. Publish: review everything, then click Publish. Meta reviews the ad, usually within 24 hours.

In addition, Ads Manager lets you test two versions of an ad against each other. For example, you can test a Reel against a photo, or two different headlines. As a result, you learn what your customers respond to before you spend more.

Method 3: Pay a creator for a sponsored post

Sometimes the best Instagram sponsored post comes from someone else’s account. When a creator with an engaged audience posts about your product, their followers often trust the message more than a brand ad.

Meta offers two tools for this:

  • The Paid partnership label: the creator tags your brand, and Instagram shows “Paid partnership with” your brand name above the post. This tells followers clearly that a brand paid for it.
  • Partnership ads: you put money behind the creator’s post, so it runs as an ad from the creator’s account and yours together. Therefore, you reach new people with the creator’s voice and face.

On DeeGeet Creators, brands can browse approved creators, check their audience size and book them directly. Each creator applies first, and DeeGeet reviews their accounts before approval. So you avoid paying accounts with fake followers.

Before any creator posts, agree the goal, the key message, the deadline, the number of revisions and how long you may use the content in your own ads. Also, ask the creator to use the Paid partnership label every time.

How much does an Instagram sponsored post cost in Nigeria?

You choose your own budget, so an Instagram sponsored post can cost a few thousand naira or several million. In other words, there is no fixed price. The final cost depends on your audience, your goal, the season and how good your content is.

According to a 2026 cost guide by Grey, which draws on Nigerian advertiser data, typical costs look like this:

Result you pay forTypical cost in Nigeria
Minimum daily budget on a naira accountAbout ₦2,000 to ₦2,500 a day
1,000 views on the Instagram feed₦1,200 to ₦4,000
One click to your website₦30 to ₦100 for traffic campaigns
One message conversation₦200 to ₦1,000
One lead from a form₦500 to ₦3,000

Source: Grey, Facebook Ads cost in Nigeria (2026). These are advertiser estimates and not official Meta prices, so treat them as a guide.

In addition, remember three extra costs:

  1. VAT: Meta adds 7.5 percent VAT to ad spend for advertisers whose business country is Nigeria. This rule started on 1 January 2022, as reported by TheCable. VAT registered businesses can add their VAT number in Meta’s billing settings for their receipts.
  2. The Apple fee: boosting inside the iPhone app adds 30 percent, unless you add funds on the web first.
  3. Creative and vetting: good photos or videos, creator fees and ARCON vetting all cost money before the ad spend begins.

Costs also change through the year. For example, the Grey guide notes that ads usually cost the least from January to March and the most in November, when many brands compete for attention before Christmas.

A simple starting budget

If you are new to Instagram sponsored posts, start small and grow. The plan below is a starting point we recommend for small businesses. Adjust it once your own results come in.

WeekDaily budgetWhat to do
Week 1₦3,000 to ₦5,000Test two posts with the same audience
Week 2₦3,000 to ₦5,000Keep the better post and test a second audience
Week 3₦5,000 to ₦10,000Put more money behind the winning post and audience
Week 4Increase by about 20% at a timeKeep increasing while the cost per result stays steady

How to pay for Instagram ads from Nigeria

Payment is where many Nigerian advertisers get stuck with their first Instagram sponsored post. Fortunately, you have more options than before.

When you create an ad account, Meta asks you to choose the account currency. According to the Grey guide, Nigerian accounts can use naira or US dollars:

  • Naira accounts suit businesses that only advertise on Instagram and Facebook. You pay with naira cards or other local methods Meta offers, and you avoid exchange fees.
  • Dollar accounts suit businesses that also run Google or TikTok ads, which commonly bill in dollars. In that case, you pay with a dollar card.

Choose the currency carefully, because Meta does not let you change it on an existing ad account. Also, download your VAT invoices from the billing section each month, so your accountant can record them.

If a card payment fails, first check that your bank allows international online payments on that card. Then confirm that the card has enough funds to cover the budget plus VAT.

Who should see your Instagram sponsored post?

Targeting decides whether your money reaches buyers or browsers. According to the Digital 2026 Nigeria report by DataReportal, Instagram ads could reach 10.0 million people in Nigeria in late 2025. So pick the right slice of that audience.

The table below shows how different businesses might target their Instagram sponsored post:

BusinessLocationAgeInterests or behaviour
Fashion store in LekkiLagos, or a radius around Lekki20 to 40Fashion, shopping, beauty
Cake shop in IbadanIbadan, within a 15 km radius22 to 45Parties, weddings, baking
Online course creatorAll of Nigeria18 to 35Online learning, careers, entrepreneurship
Logistics companyLagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt25 to 50Small business, online shopping, ecommerce

Also, consider these powerful options in Ads Manager:

  • Custom audiences: show ads to people who already visited your website, messaged you or engaged with your Instagram account.
  • Lookalike audiences: reach new people who resemble your best customers.
  • Advantage+ audience: let Meta’s system find buyers, using your choices as a starting suggestion.

In general, start with a broad audience and let the results guide you. Very narrow audiences cost more and give Meta too little room to learn.

What content makes a good Instagram sponsored post?

The content of an Instagram sponsored post does most of the work. Even a perfect audience will scroll past a dull post. Therefore, follow these rules:

  • Use video where you can: Reels and Stories fill the screen, so they hold attention longer than a single photo.
  • Hook in the first two seconds: show the product, the result or a bold question right away.
  • Show real people: a real customer, staff member or creator builds more trust than a stock image.
  • Add captions: many people watch with the sound off, so put the key message on screen.
  • Make one clear offer: for example, “Free delivery in Ikeja this weekend”.
  • End with one action: such as “Send us a message to order”.

Use the right size for every Instagram sponsored post, too. For Reels and Stories, upload vertical video at 1080 by 1920 pixels. For feed posts, use 1080 by 1350 pixels, because the taller shape takes up more of the screen than a square.

Why Instagram sponsored posts get rejected

Meta reviews every ad before it runs. Usually the review takes less than a day. However, Meta rejects some ads, and the reason is often avoidable.

Common reasons include:

  • Misleading claims: promises such as “lose 10 kg in a week” or “guaranteed income” break Meta’s rules.
  • Before and after images: photos that compare bodies before and after a product are not allowed for many health and beauty products.
  • Personal attributes: text such as “Are you overweight?” or “Struggling with debt?” suggests you know personal facts about the viewer.
  • Restricted products: some products, such as weapons and certain drugs, cannot be advertised at all, while others need approval.
  • Copyrighted music or content: using a popular song or someone else’s video without permission can stop your post from being boosted.
  • Broken links: a website link that does not load, or a page that does not match the ad, can cause rejection.

If Meta rejects your Instagram sponsored post, read the reason in the notification, fix the problem and submit again. Also, you can request another review if you believe the decision was wrong.

How to measure your Instagram sponsored post

Every Instagram sponsored post should earn back more than it costs. So measure the number that matches your goal, not just the likes.

Your goalMain number to watchWhere to find it
AwarenessReach and cost per 1,000 people reachedBoost results or Ads Manager
MessagesCost per message conversationAds Manager and your WhatsApp or Instagram inbox
Website visitsCost per link click and time on siteAds Manager and Google Analytics
SalesReturn on ad spendYour sales records and Ads Manager

To work out return on ad spend, divide the revenue from the ads by the money you spent, including VAT. For example, ₦430,000 in sales from ₦107,500 of spend gives a return of 4. In other words, you earned ₦4 for every ₦1 spent.

In addition, ask every new customer how they found you. Many Nigerian buyers see an ad, then send a WhatsApp message days later, so the ad tools miss some sales that your own records will catch.

Instagram sponsored post rules in Nigeria

Advertising in Nigeria follows clear rules, and they apply to every Instagram sponsored post too. According to a summary of the rules by Afriwise, ARCON must vet adverts before publication. The council can fine an advertiser up to ₦1,000,000 for each advert published without vetting. Moreover, influencers must disclose clearly when a brand paid for a post.

So build vetting time into every campaign plan. Also, keep your claims honest and provable, and never collect people’s numbers for marketing messages without their consent.

This section is general information and not legal advice. Before a large campaign, confirm your position with a lawyer or directly with ARCON.

Common mistakes to avoid

Many businesses waste money on their first Instagram sponsored post. Fortunately, most mistakes are easy to avoid.

  • Boosting a weak post: paid reach cannot fix content nobody likes. Instead, boost your best performing post.
  • Targeting the whole country for a local shop: you pay to reach people who can never visit you. So target your city or a radius.
  • Stopping after two days: Meta needs time to learn. Therefore, run each test for at least five to seven days.
  • Boosting on an iPhone without funds added on the web: you pay an extra 30 percent. Instead, add funds on a computer first.
  • Forgetting VAT in the budget: a ₦50,000 plan costs ₦53,750. So include the 7.5 percent from the start.
  • Ignoring messages: an ad that brings chats wastes money if nobody replies. Therefore, answer within an hour during business hours.

Frequently asked questions about Instagram sponsored posts

How much does it cost to sponsor a post on Instagram in Nigeria?

You set the budget yourself. According to Grey’s 2026 guide, the minimum daily budget on a naira account is about ₦2,000 to ₦2,500. Many small businesses start with ₦3,000 to ₦5,000 a day for five to seven days, plus 7.5 percent VAT.

How long does Instagram take to approve a sponsored post?

Meta usually reviews ads within 24 hours. Sometimes it takes longer, especially around busy periods such as Black Friday and Christmas.

What is the difference between boosting and Ads Manager?

Do I need ARCON approval for an Instagram sponsored post?

In most cases, yes. ARCON requires vetting for adverts, including social media ads and paid influencer posts, before publication. Only a few types, such as job vacancies and notices, are exempt.

Can I pay for Instagram ads with a naira card?

Yes, if your ad account uses naira and your bank allows online payments on the card. Meta adds 7.5 percent VAT for Nigerian advertisers.
