How to Build a Digital Marketing Strategy, with a Free Template

A digital marketing strategy is a written plan that links one business goal to the online channels, content, budget and numbers that will reach it. To build one, set a measurable goal, describe your customer, check where you stand today, choose your channels, set a budget, plan 90 days of work and review the results every week. Below, you will find all ten steps and a free template you can download and fill in today.

However, many businesses post, advertise and send emails without a plan. As a result, they spend money and still cannot say what worked. A clear digital marketing strategy fixes that, because every naira and every hour then serves one goal. So this guide shows you how to build a digital marketing strategy step by step, using examples from Nigerian businesses and DeeGeet’s own planning process.

In this guide:

  1. What a digital marketing strategy is
  2. Why your business needs one in 2026
  3. The ten steps to build it
  4. The free template
  5. A worked example
  6. Tools, mistakes and common questions

What is a digital marketing strategy?

Put simply, a digital marketing strategy is your plan for winning customers online. In short, it answers five questions: what you want, who you want to reach, where they spend time online, what you will say to them, and how you will measure success.

Also, your strategy covers every online channel you use. For example, that can include your website, Google search, social media, WhatsApp, email, online ads, creators and influencers. Above all, it makes those channels work together rather than separately.

Strategy, plan and tactics compared

Often, people use these three words as if they mean the same thing. However, each one does a different job, as the table shows.

TermWhat it answersExample
StrategyWhere are we going, and why will we win?“Become the first choice for same day cake delivery in Lagos Mainland, through Google search and Instagram”
PlanWhat will we do, when, and with what budget?“Publish 12 Reels a month, run ₦150,000 of ads, launch a Google Business Profile by 1 November”
TacticsWhat exactly happens today?“Film the red velvet cake video and reply to all Instagram messages by 6 pm”

So the strategy comes first. Then the plan puts it into a calendar, and the tactics carry it out day by day.

Why every business needs a digital marketing strategy in 2026

First of all, your customers are already online. According to the Digital 2026 Nigeria report by DataReportal, Nigeria had 109 million internet users in late 2025. In addition, the country had 165 million mobile connections, equal to 69.2 percent of the population. Meanwhile, TikTok alone could reach 47.8 million Nigerian adults with ads.

However, that reach brings a problem. Every competitor can reach the same people, so attention costs more each year. Therefore, a business without a digital marketing strategy usually ends up in one of three traps:

  • Random activity: it posts and advertises whenever someone has time, so nothing builds over months.
  • Copying competitors: it does whatever rivals do, even when their customers differ from its own.
  • No measurement: it cannot tell which naira brought a sale, so it cannot spend more on what works.

By contrast, a business with a clear strategy knows its target, its best channels and its numbers. As a result, it spends less to win each customer, and it grows faster with the same budget.

How to build a digital marketing strategy in 10 steps

The ten steps below follow the order DeeGeet uses when planning for clients. Work through them in order, and write every answer into the template further down.

Step 1: Start with one business goal

Your digital marketing strategy should serve a business result, such as sales, leads, bookings or sign ups. So begin with the goal your business owner or board already cares about. For example, “grow monthly revenue from ₦4 million to ₦6 million” is a business goal. Followers and likes, by contrast, are only signs along the way.

Then choose one main goal for the next six to twelve months. If you chase five goals at once, your budget and attention split five ways.

Step 2: Turn the goal into SMART targets

Next, break the goal into targets you can measure, so progress is easy to see. The SMART method helps here, because each target must be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time bound.

Weak targetSMART target
Get more customersWin 40 new customers a month from online channels by 31 March
Grow our InstagramReach 15,000 Lagos accounts a month and turn 2% of them into WhatsApp chats by February
Rank on GoogleReach the first page of Google for “logistics company in Lagos” within six months
Improve salesRaise the average online order from ₦18,000 to ₦22,000 by the end of the quarter

Also, write three to five targets at most. Then give each one an owner, so somebody answers for it every week.

Step 3: Describe your ideal customer

After that, describe the person who buys from you. Marketers call this a buyer persona, and it shapes every later part of your digital marketing strategy. In practice, it is a one page profile built from real customer facts rather than guesses.

QuestionExample answer for a Lagos logistics company
Who buys?Owners of small online stores, aged 25 to 40, in Lagos and Abuja
What problem do they have?Late deliveries that cause refunds and bad reviews
Where do they look for help?Google search, Instagram and WhatsApp groups for online sellers
What makes them choose?Price per delivery, speed, tracking and how fast the company replies
What stops them buying?Fear of lost parcels and hidden charges

To get these answers, first talk to at least five recent customers. Also, read your WhatsApp chats and reviews, because buyers often state their real worries there.

Step 4: Audit where you stand today

Before you plan the future, check the present. So list every online channel you own and score its condition honestly.

ChannelWhat to checkGood sign
WebsiteSpeed on a phone, clear prices, a contact button on every pageLoads in under 3 seconds, and visitors send enquiries
Google Business ProfileCorrect address, hours, photos and recent reviewsAt least 20 reviews with replies from you
Google searchWhich searches bring you visitors, from Google Search ConsoleGrowing clicks month after month
Social mediaFollowers, reach and messages from each platformComments and chats, not only likes
WhatsAppResponse time and how many chats become salesReplies within an hour
Email listNumber of subscribers who agreed to hear from youOpens and clicks on each message

As a result of the audit, you will see your strongest channel and your biggest gap. Usually, the fastest wins come from fixing the gap that already loses customers, such as a slow website or an empty Google Business Profile.

Step 5: Study three competitors

Then choose three competitors that your customers also consider, because they set the standard buyers compare you against. For each one, note which channels they use, what they post, how they price and what their reviews praise or criticise.

In particular, look for three things:

  • Search gaps: questions customers search on Google that no competitor answers well. For instance, you can check search demand for free in Google Keyword Planner.
  • Service gaps: complaints that appear again and again in competitors’ reviews.
  • Channel gaps: platforms where your customers spend time but competitors stay quiet.

Each gap is a chance for your digital marketing strategy to win attention at a lower cost.

Step 6: Map the customer journey

However, customers rarely buy the first time they see you. Instead, they move through stages, from first hearing about you to buying again. So your digital marketing strategy needs content and channels for every stage.

StageWhat the customer thinksBest channelsContent that helpsNumber to watch
Awareness“I have a problem”TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Google searchHelpful videos and articlesReach and new visitors
Consideration“Who can solve it?”Google search, reviews, websiteComparisons, prices, case studiesWebsite visits and enquiries
Decision“Can I trust this business?”WhatsApp, Google Business Profile, retargeting adsReviews, guarantees, fast repliesLeads and sales
Loyalty“Should I buy again?”Email, WhatsApp, social mediaOffers, tips and thank you messagesRepeat purchases and referrals

When you map the journey, gaps appear quickly. For example, many businesses spend heavily on awareness, yet they lose buyers at the decision stage because nobody answers WhatsApp after 6 pm.

Step 7: Choose your channels

Now pick the channels that match your customer and your goal. In general, choose two or three main channels and do them well before you add more.

ChannelTime to first resultsOngoing costBest for
Search engine optimisation3 to 6 monthsContent and expert timeSteady, free visitors who are ready to buy
Google AdsDaysYou pay for each clickUrgent searches, such as “plumber near me”
Social media marketingWeeks for organic, days for adsContent, time and ad budgetAwareness, trust and community
WhatsApp BusinessDaysFree, plus staff timeClosing sales and keeping customers
Email marketingWeeksLow monthly software feeRepeat sales to people who already know you
Creators and influencersDays to weeksCreator feesBorrowing trust from people your customers follow
Field marketingDaysPay per sign up or per daySign ups, product trials and local activations

For a deeper look at social channels, also read our full guide to social media marketing in Nigeria. Similarly, if you need people on the ground in any state, DeeGeet Field jobs lets brands hire verified field marketers and pay only for confirmed sign ups.

Step 8: Set your budget

Set your goal first, and then let it decide your budget. So start with the result you need, then work out what it costs to reach it.

For this reason, a simple method works well:

  1. First, estimate how much one new customer is worth to you in profit over a year.
  2. Next, decide the most you can spend to win one customer while still making a profit.
  3. Then multiply that amount by the number of new customers in your SMART target.

For example, if a customer brings ₦60,000 profit a year, you might spend up to ₦15,000 to win one. Forty new customers a month would then justify up to ₦600,000 a month across all channels.

As a starting point, DeeGeet suggests splitting the budget as follows, then moving money towards whatever performs best.

Business stageContent and creatorsPaid adsSearch and websiteTools and reporting
New business, first year30%40%20%10%
Growing business25%35%30%10%
Established brand25%30%35%10%

Treat these shares as a starting guide. After 90 days, your own numbers should decide the split.

Step 9: Plan 90 days of action

In practice, a digital marketing strategy only works once it becomes a calendar. Therefore, plan the next 90 days in detail, and keep the rest of the year as a rough outline.

WeeksMain workDone when
1 and 2Fix the gaps from your audit, such as website speed and the Google Business ProfileThe audit list is complete
3 and 4Set up tracking with Google Analytics, Search Console and ad pixelsEvery enquiry and sale is recorded
5 to 8Publish content on your chosen channels and test small adsYou know your cost per lead on each channel
9 to 12Move budget to the best channel and add a second testCost per customer falls month on month

In addition, block one hour every Friday for a review. That habit keeps the plan alive when daily work gets busy.

Step 10: Measure, report and improve

Finally, decide which numbers prove progress, and check them every week. Choose numbers linked to money, because reach and likes only matter if they lead to sales.

GoalMain measureHow to calculate it
LeadsCost per leadTotal spend divided by the number of leads
SalesCustomer acquisition costTotal marketing spend divided by new customers
ProfitReturn on ad spendRevenue from ads divided by ad spend
Search growthClicks from GoogleGoogle Search Console, Performance report
LoyaltyRepeat purchase rateRepeat buyers divided by all buyers, times 100

Also, write a one page report each month. Then show the numbers, explain what changed, and list three actions for next month. As a result, your digital marketing strategy keeps improving instead of sitting in a drawer.

How AI search affects your digital marketing strategy

Today, many buyers ask Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT or Gemini for advice before they visit any website. As a result, your digital marketing strategy should also aim to be the source those tools quote. Fortunately, the same habits that win on Google also help here:

  • Answer questions directly: put a short, clear answer at the top of each page, then explain the detail below it.
  • Show real experience: for example, add your own prices, photos, results and named authors, because AI tools favour sources they can trust.
  • Keep facts consistent: use the same business name, address and phone number on your website, Google Business Profile and directories.
  • Earn mentions: in addition, appear in trusted directories, news stories and industry lists, since AI answers often draw on them.

Therefore, treat AI search as part of search engine optimisation rather than a separate channel. Then track whether your brand appears when you ask these tools about your service and city.

Free digital marketing strategy template

To make this easier, we built a free template that follows the ten steps above. Specifically, it is a spreadsheet with tabs for goals and targets, the customer profile, the channel audit, a budget calculator, the 90 day plan and weekly numbers.

Download the free digital marketing strategy template (Excel)

Alternatively, if you prefer to start on paper, copy the summary below and fill in each line.

SectionYour answer
Main business goal for the next 12 months
Three SMART targets, each with an owner
Ideal customer in two sentences
Strongest channel today and biggest gap
Three competitor gaps you will use
Two or three main channels
Monthly budget and how you will split it
The work for weeks 1 to 12
Numbers you will check every Friday

Digital marketing strategy example: a Lagos logistics company

To show the template in use, here is a short example of a digital marketing strategy. The business is invented, but the steps match real planning work.

Part of the strategyExample answer
BusinessA delivery company in Ikeja that serves online stores across Lagos
GoalGrow from 300 to 500 deliveries a week within six months
CustomerOwners of small Instagram and WhatsApp stores who need reliable same day delivery
AuditThe website loads slowly on phones, the Google Business Profile has only four reviews, and nobody replies to WhatsApp after 6 pm
ChannelsSearch engine optimisation for searches such as “logistics company in Lagos”, Instagram content for online sellers, and WhatsApp Business with an evening shift
Budget₦400,000 a month, split between content, Instagram ads, a website fix and tracking tools
First 90 daysFix the website and the Google profile in weeks 1 and 2, then collect reviews, publish two Reels a week and run small ads to Lagos sellers
Main measureCost per new store signed, and weekly deliveries from online channels

Because each part links back to one goal, the team knows exactly what to do on Monday morning. In addition, the owner can see within a month whether the money is working.

A digital marketing strategy on a small budget

Many Nigerian businesses start with very little money for marketing. Even so, a digital marketing strategy still works on a small budget, because it tells you where not to waste money. In that case, put time before money, and follow this order:

  1. Free foundations first: set up your Google Business Profile, WhatsApp Business and one social platform. All three cost nothing except time.
  2. Reviews next: ask every happy customer for a Google review. As a result, you win more local searches without paying for ads.
  3. One content channel: publish useful content on one platform every week, so people start to recognise your name.
  4. Small paid tests: once sales come in, put part of the profit into small ads behind your best posts.
  5. Search for the long term: finally, publish answers to the questions your customers ask on Google, so free visitors grow month after month.

In short, a small budget changes the speed of your digital marketing strategy, while the steps stay the same.

Tools that support your digital marketing strategy

Fortunately, most essential tools are free. So the table lists the ones every small business should set up.

Common digital marketing strategy mistakes

Even so, careful businesses still fall into these traps. Fortunately, each one has a simple fix.

  • No single goal: the plan tries to do everything, so it achieves little. Instead, choose one main goal.
  • Too many channels: the team spreads itself thin. So master two or three channels first.
  • No tracking: sales happen, but nobody knows where they came from. Therefore, set up tracking before you spend on ads.
  • Ignoring search: businesses chase social media and forget Google, even though buyers search there with intent. Also, an empty Google Business Profile loses local sales every day.
  • Changing course too soon: search takes months, so judge it after six months rather than six weeks.
  • Skipping the rules: adverts in Nigeria need vetting by the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) before they go live. Likewise, marketing messages need the receiver’s consent under data protection rules.

Frequently asked questions about digital marketing strategy

What are the main parts of a digital marketing strategy?

A complete digital marketing strategy has a goal, measurable targets, a customer profile, an audit, a competitor review, a customer journey, chosen channels, a budget, a 90 day plan and a way to measure results.

How long should a digital marketing strategy cover?

Generally, set the direction for 12 months and plan the detail for 90 days. Then review the whole strategy every quarter, because platforms, prices and customer habits change quickly.

How much should a small business spend on digital marketing?

Start from your goal rather than a fixed figure. First, work out what a new customer is worth, then decide the most you can spend to win one. Finally, multiply that by your monthly target for new customers.

What is the difference between a digital marketing strategy and a digital marketing plan?

Simply put, the strategy sets the direction: the goal, the customer and the chosen channels. By contrast, the plan turns that direction into tasks, dates and budgets.

Can I build a digital marketing strategy myself?

Yes, and the free template above walks you through each step. However, many businesses ask an agency to check the plan or run part of it, especially search and paid ads. To learn the basics first, read our guide to what digital marketing is.

How do I know if my digital marketing strategy is working?

Check whether your main measure improves each month, such as cost per lead or new customers from online channels. However, if it stays flat for three months, change one channel or message at a time and test again.
